What:
The Things Network is a global, open, crowd-sourced Internet of Things data network. It uses the LoRaWAN network technology to provide low power wireless connectivity over long range
Typically the range can reach up to 20km in free space.
This OpenHackuarium we focus on the history and the current applications of the Things Network by looking at the very active community of Zurich who have enabled LoRa reception in most places in and around Zurich. A true community-built internet access network! The network consists of gateways (think: router at your home) and nodes (your Arduino, Raspberry Pi...). Nodes send data to the network of gateways deployed by the community.
Come and join us if you want to learn more on how to use the network or even setup your own gateway. The Lac Leman area needs to really build up coverage :)
Everything that carries power will be connected to Internet eventually.
Controlling the network that makes this possible means controlling the world. We believe that this power should not be restricted to a few people, companies or nations. Instead this should be distributed over as many people as possible without the possibility to be taken away by anyone. We therefore founded "The Things Network".
