WHY?
Interdisciplinary science is hard. Researchers usually work together with experts from their own field and it can be difficult to look at a problem from a different perspective or find help to develop solutions that involve a complementary skillset. Hackathons are punctual events bringing together people who do not usually work together, helping bring fresh ideas into the research process.
With this Science Hackathon, we want to bring together scientists, as well as non-scientists, from western Switzerland and beyond. Over the course of three days, by working in small working groups with people complementary skill sets we want to foster collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas. The goal is to generate solutions to research problems. These could be either experimental design or tools.
HOW?
By inviting 5 or 6 early career scientists who deal with a research problem that requires skills beyond their reach. A solution would significantly accelerate their research or open new perspectives.
By inviting 15-24 participants with complementary skills. They will form support teams and will contribute their expertise and help find a solution to these problems.
The resulting teams will work on an output of their choice. It could be:
- A prototype research tool, either hardware or software, to collect or analyse new data.
- A draft research article describing the tool or the data analysed during the week-end.
- A research proposal to start a project planned during the event.
- A video or any other format to communicate science to a wider audience
Projects
- SolidCat
Tool to select and sort cells based on their ability to produce a chemical of interest -> Measure fluorescence or absorbance in the medium where cells are grown.
Team members:
- Chronically Stressed
Get stream of data from wearable to measure heart rate and use it as a predictor of a chronic stress.
- SkeletonCAD
Christina Enriqe
New software by changing the way objects are represented in space. Hard mathematical problem.
- Om(nom)5
Tom - software developer Bérangère - Life scientist Guillaume - Computer science and web development
Web app where people can enter food items they ate and can figure out the health impact and sustainability of their diet.
- RodCheck
- Natural Blue
Gather information about natural sources of pigments that can be grown.
